Particle Test Failed at Belgian Inspection — Diagnosis First

The particle test (deeltjestest) measures fine particulate emissions from your diesel exhaust. Failing it means your DPF or emissions system is not performing correctly. The cause needs to be identified before any repair is attempted.

What the Particle Test Measures

The particle test measures the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM) in your diesel exhaust. Modern diesel vehicles are required to have a functioning DPF that filters these particles before they leave the exhaust. A failed particle test means the measured particulate level exceeded the legal limit. Your inspection report shows the measured value and the limit.

DPF Condition, EGR, AdBlue, Catalyst and Combustion Causes

A failed particle test is not always caused by a blocked DPF. A damaged DPF substrate that has cracked or melted will allow particles to pass through even if it is not blocked. A faulty EGR valve increases soot production, overwhelming the DPF. Injector problems cause incomplete combustion and excess particulates. A turbo oil leak contaminates the exhaust system. AdBlue and SCR faults on Euro 6 vehicles affect NOx emissions and can trigger related failures. Diagnosis identifies which of these is the specific cause for your vehicle.

Reviewing Your Inspection Report

Your inspection report shows the measured particulate value and the legal limit. Bring this report to the diagnosis appointment. It helps us understand the severity of the failure and focus the diagnosis on the most likely cause. If the measured value is only slightly above the limit, a different repair may be needed than if the value is far above the limit.

Legal Solutions Only — No DPF Delete

DPF removal is illegal in Belgium. A vehicle without a functioning DPF will fail the particle test permanently. Emissions bypass devices are also illegal. The only legal solutions are proper diagnosis and targeted repair — DPF cleaning, DPF replacement, EGR repair, injector service or sensor replacement, depending on what the diagnosis finds.

Common Symptoms

Failed particle test at keuring
High particulate reading on inspection report
DPF warning light on dashboard
Black smoke from exhaust
Loss of engine power

Common Causes

  • Blocked DPF from accumulated soot
  • Physically damaged DPF filter substrate
  • EGR valve fault causing excess soot production
  • Injector problems producing excess particulates
  • Turbo oil leak contaminating the filter

Diagnosis First — Always

We never recommend a repair without measuring first. Guessing costs you money.

  1. 1

Review the inspection report to understand the measured particulate level

  2. 2

Read fault codes from the engine management system

  3. 3

Measure DPF back pressure and assess soot and ash load

  4. 4

Inspect the DPF for physical damage

  5. 5

Check EGR valve and injector performance

  6. 6

Recommend the appropriate repair based on findings

Repair Options

DPF cleaning if the filter is blocked but physically intact
DPF replacement if the filter substrate is damaged
EGR valve repair if identified as root cause
Injector service if fuel delivery is the underlying issue

Important: What Not To Do

  • !DPF removal is illegal in Belgium — do not attempt it
  • !We cannot guarantee your vehicle will pass the re-inspection
  • !Cheap additives rarely solve the underlying cause of a particle test failure

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the particle test?

The particle test (deeltjestest) measures the concentration of fine particulates in your diesel exhaust. It is part of the Belgian vehicle inspection (keuring) for diesel vehicles.

Why did I fail the particle test?

The most common causes are a blocked or damaged DPF, a faulty EGR valve, injector problems or a turbo oil leak. Diagnosis identifies the specific cause for your vehicle.

Can I pass the particle test after DPF cleaning?

Cleaning can resolve a blocked DPF, but we cannot guarantee inspection approval. The outcome depends on the full technical state of the vehicle and whether the root cause has been correctly identified and repaired.

Is my DPF damaged if I failed the particle test?

Not necessarily. The DPF could be blocked rather than damaged. Diagnosis with back pressure measurement and physical inspection determines whether cleaning or replacement is needed.

What if my DPF is physically damaged?

A physically damaged DPF substrate cannot be cleaned — it needs replacement. Diagnosis confirms whether the substrate is intact or damaged. If replacement is needed, we identify and address the root cause before fitting a new filter.
